Tesla Universe Chat Archive
The following is a transcript from Tesla Universe's first guest hosted chat session with Jeff Parisse of kVA Effects.
We had a good turn out and a great time. We learned a lot about Jeff and his current activities, plus came up with some ideas on how to improve future chat sessions.
We certainly appreciate Jeff's willingness to be the first and look forward to his continued participation.
| cameron | there's the man... |
| JParisse | wow ... i'm not late... ;-) |
| Hankenstein | Hi Jeff |
| JParisse | Hi everybody and welcome to the free form chat... |
| Phillip | http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2674/3821587179_c31acf3104_o.jpg Check it out Jeff :) |
| Phillip | SparkDodger Better watch out :P |
| JParisse | very sweet! |
| Phillip | Mine pumps out 50" sparks from a 12" secondary :D |
| JParisse | I like the plexy over the primary does it help?.... |
| Hankenstein | Pretty nice, eh? |
| JParisse | yeah... |
| Phillip | It doesn't hurt. |
| JParisse | ;-) |
| Phillip | It certainly helps hold the primary together. |
| Phillip | I have to remake the supports. |
| Phillip | They're 1/4" acrylic. |
| JParisse | ah an upside down presentation... cool... |
| Phillip | Several broke in half. |
| JParisse | Hey cameron... ready to sart?... |
| Hankenstein | I like the up side down idea |
| cameron | sure... |
| Phillip | What's upside down? |
| JParisse | the primary "hangs" from the acrylic... |
| Hankenstein | hang it from the ceiling |
| John | hi gius |
| Phillip | Ohhh |
| John | guys* |
| Phillip | This one could do it :) |
| JParisse | OK who is first with the questions?.... |
| Phillip | I actually bolted everything down in this one. |
| Phillip | More people should be showing up. |
| JParisse | Sacremento, California 1961.... next! |
| John | were is steve i would have expected him here by now |
| Phillip | Hi |
| John | hey |
| JParisse | hi Gary! |
| cameron | hi gary |
| Hankenstein | hi |
| GaryPeterson | Hi Jeff! |
| JParisse | I have news for ya Gary... but I'll let it leak out during the chat |
| GaryPeterson | Hi all. |
| Phillip | Okay first question. |
| Phillip | Can you send me a free SparkDodger :)? |
| John | LOL |
| GaryPeterson | I'm all ears, uh eyes. |
| JParisse | Yes... but you'd have to indenture yourself for a few years. |
| Phillip | Hahahaha, what kind of commitment are we talking about :-) |
| JParisse | absolute perfection... ask anybody who has worked for me |
| Hankenstein | There you go, Jeff...get 'em young and break 'em in right! |
| Phillip | Time? |
| JParisse | OK ready? |
| Phillip | Sure. |
| Hankenstein | Could you use an old timer? |
| JParisse | I'll give you a million dollars to work for me... I pay in $15 dollar hourly increments.... |
| JParisse | you're not an old timer... if you are I am!!!! |
| Phillip | Ha |
| Phillip | What kind of primary current do you run on SparkDodger? |
| JParisse | my favorite boss joke.... |
| JParisse | OK now there is a good question the chat is officially started... |
| JParisse | I don't know... Aron does... the total power level of the device is about 1500W |
| Phillip | Oh, what kind of IGBTs? |
| Hankenstein | Hey Jeff, are you ready to pick up you chops again? We need another jam. |
| JParisse | Um... let me look on the IGBTs.... Drums yes... with this ecomomy I might have to take up my old line of work !!! |
| John | record producing? |
| Phillip | Just talk to Obama, I'm sure you could get some kind of Tesla Coil stimulus plan. |
| JParisse | night club drumming.... |
| John | ah haha |
| JParisse | record producing became rap producing.. ;-( |
| Hankenstein | I bet we could pack the house with real time special effects. |
| cameron | i have a question: what became of the deal with the black eyed peas? |
| JParisse | CM600HA-24H... does that sound right?... I'm not really sure... |
| John | :O |
| John | big igbt's |
| Phillip | :O |
| Phillip | Fo? |
| Hankenstein | There you go...reliability in those CM600's |
| Phillip | I'm actually not that surprised to hear you're using big silicon. |
| Phillip | Can't have that stuff blowing up on you. |
| JParisse | realiablity is job #1 It CAN'T FAIL... |
| JParisse | I'd never sell another EVER |
| John | heh yeah |
| JParisse | ok on to the Black Eyed Peas.... |
| Phillip | Reliability is job #345529842389749823 for me. |
| John | that's why you have to overbuild everything |
| John | LOL\\ |
| Phillip | Big sparks are #1 :) |
| cameron | ur, big smoke |
| Hankenstein | Chris tried to blow up my "Stroker II" coil with those SLOW CM600 at nearly 4khz! |
| Phillip | Ha |
| John | phillip lemme give you some advice, dont start a tesla coil company :-) |
| JParisse | got it.... but I am here to give "another" perspective... ;-( |
| John | haha hank |
| Phillip | A winking smiley? |
| JParisse | no DO... please.... I need competition.... |
| Phillip | *sad face |
| JParisse | just do it right so one's mistakes don't sully the pool |
| Phillip | I've never seen someone wink and frown at me. |
| JParisse | ok on to the Peas... |
| GaryPeterson | Jeff, remind me of SparkDodger's frequency? |
| JParisse | First.... all three guys came over to the shop in May |
| JParisse | Fergie was elsewhere... we demoed everything we had... |
| JParisse | they LOVED what they saw but we not as impressed with the musical coils as I had hoped |
| JParisse | anyway... it was hugs all around |
| JParisse | it was clear that we make a great impression with the band |
| JParisse | OK... |
| Phillip | So they dont' want to do the musical stuff with coils? |
| John | awesome man |
| JParisse | so they go on tour and shoot up to the top of the charts here and in the UK |
| JParisse | I'm am in conversations with the band.... |
| JParisse | they texted me the night Polo Molina punched Perez Hilton in the face... |
| BartBAnderson | haha |
| JParisse | so everything is cool.... then.... |
| John | haha |
| JParisse | they pass everything off to their tour guys |
| JParisse | two guys both have been in the concert toru business forever... |
| JParisse | and are sitting on their hands because it has become an easy job for them |
| JParisse | they said stuff like "We'll I do super bowl halftimes..." |
| JParisse | like I'm susposed to be impressed by that |
| JParisse | hundreds maybe thousands of beople do halftimes |
| BartBAnderson | Jeff, you need to do a half time show |
| John | yeah |
| JParisse | wmat? so I can suck like Springsteen and AeroSmith.... JK |
| BartBAnderson | hahaha |
| John | LOL |
| JParisse | ;-) |
| Phillip | I'd be happy with just rolling TCs out there and running them. |
| Phillip | Ordinary people might not be so impressed. |
| John | you would phillip :P |
| Phillip | I don't need any silly pop music. |
| John | lol |
| BartBAnderson | Hey, a Super Bowl show with "said" band and a coil in the background! |
| JParisse | so they are asking me for very basic stuff like.... send me a list of all the shows you have done, where when, how many crates..... da, da ,da da, da..... I mean a huge list of "busywork" type stuff |
| BartBAnderson | sounds as fun as doing taxes |
| JParisse | I don't even have a plan form the band yet.... "I" need plans, drawings, specs..... |
| Phillip | They have no idea what they want? |
| JParisse | it wasn't a pissing match... (yeah right) but they didn't know what the hell was going on except that they do superbowls. |
| JParisse | The tour guy leaked a email that someone was passing them a contact for a "new tesla coil guy".... |
| John | ha |
| BartBAnderson | Oh crap |
| BartBAnderson | Let me guess... no wait... I shouldn't |
| JParisse | I asked who the new guy was and that it wasn't a good idea to trust high voltage physics to a "new guy" |
| John | lol |
| cameron | uh oh... yeah, my thoughts too |
| JParisse | it might be... |
| JParisse | that would be SO funny |
| BartBAnderson | wouldn't doubt it |
| John | any idea who the "new guy" is? |
| JParisse | it isn't Syd Klinge because he is a friend (and I asked) |
| BartBAnderson | Didn't ask your non-friends? LOL |
| John | hey maybe it's steve ward :-) |
| JParisse | no but there was two weeks of scilence... and then an apology from "Mr. Superbowl" about the mostaken email... |
| John | jk |
| JParisse | ha ha ha |
| JParisse | no.... Criss Angel go the word out about that guy.... |
| BartBAnderson | Oh, that's hilarious! |
| John | you mean chris angel as in mindfreak? |
| BartBAnderson | yep |
| John | haha |
| JParisse | yes... so the answer to the question is that we are working with the Black Eyed Peas to do something in Feb. hopefully.... |
| BartBAnderson | Excellent! |
| JParisse | Yes Criss Angel... we did his coil in Vegas.... next question?.... |
| JParisse | thanks |
| John | oh yeah i have one |
| John | is it one of your coils that's installed or at least used to be installed in the MOSI museum in tampa FL? |
| JParisse | No.... We are installing coils in Chicago and Switzerland this year... |
| John | naa this was long time ago |
| John | i saw it when i was like 7 |
| JParisse | nope... wasn't me... Jeff Belhary will know... |
| JParisse | that wasn't that long ago... lol |
| JParisse | jk |
| BartBAnderson | I'm curious about the Switz Museums coil... |
| John | lol |
| BartBAnderson | Swiss |
| JParisse | OK I'll take that as the next question... |
| JParisse | Brian Basura and Ross Overstreet |
| JParisse | make beautiful pulse discharge machines |
| JParisse | Aron Koscho make a SparkDodger(tm) Mini and I made a SG-10TC |
| JParisse | the ENTIRE high voltage show at Technorama - The Swiss Science Museum |
| JParisse | is being converted to almost all kVA technology |
| JParisse | by Effekschmiede, GmbH a german special effects firm |
| JParisse | the best part of the job was working woth the plasma ball generators |
| BartBAnderson | oh? |
| GaryPeterson | Any Tesla wireless demo yet? |
| JParisse | that may fall outside of a "Tesla" forums so I can address that stuff |
| JParisse | later but there is a YouTube video of the high speed photography we did while |
| JParisse | the machines were still in California. |
| JParisse | They just arrived in Switzerland and |
| JParisse | Brian and I get on a plane in a week! |
| BartBAnderson | Yeah, would l love to see the vid |
| JParisse | http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4XLUfBR0AU |
| JParisse | The Chicago coil |
| JParisse | goes in in December |
| GaryPeterson | I'm interested in a multi-physics model of the Tesla system, checked using actual dual Tesla coils. Greg Leyh has tried this. See http://www.teslaradio.com/pages/multiphysics.htm for Greg's circuit diagram. |
| JParisse | OK Gary... I'll take that as the next question..... |
| JParisse | What is new in wireless research.... |
| JParisse | while you guys hash out the math.... |
| JParisse | I have been working on the money side.... |
| JParisse | I just signed a NDA today so I have to dance around a bit.... |
| BartBAnderson | yep |
| JParisse | my long term goal is to support this research... WTP.... |
| John | sup steve-o |
| SteveWard | been working on my toroid, just realized this was the JP night |
| TerryBlake | jeff, since you don't have firsthand info on the sparkdodger, how about some specs on your SG-10TC? |
| JParisse | OK great!!!! I'll finish my mystery reply about WTP first... youre in the queue |
| SteveWard | i'll be checking back periodically, but im gonna be working mostly |
| JParisse | I believe that there is legitimate research that can be found in the pile |
| JParisse | of crap that people call free energy |
| JParisse | let me say this.... |
| JParisse | I do not believe that anything is free |
| JParisse | I do think however that as I said on Modern Marvels |
| JParisse | that Tesla may have been on to something.... |
| JParisse | I don't know what that is but I do have a knack for raising money |
| JParisse | and I am getting to a point where some legitimate funds can be put towards |
| JParisse | legitimate research with legitimate enginneers and scholars behind it.... |
| JParisse | hell Special Effects when down the tubes and the government |
| JParisse | seemes to be the only one with money right now... ;-) |
| JParisse | I might as well lend my expertise (directing) elsewhere |
| JParisse | comments and onto the next question |
| GaryPeterson | That sounds encouraging. Thanks for the info. |
| JParisse | Your work was discussed... so was Greg's... I'd love to help someday |
| GaryPeterson | Are you familiar with the YahooTesla Wireless group? |
| JParisse | no... I'm into TU !!!! |
| JParisse | < a loyalist |
| GaryPeterson | Remarkable that Terry entered at this moment! |
| JParisse | yeah shut up and quit talkin' about him |
| Piranha | :) |
| GaryPeterson | As he is the group's moderator. |
| JParisse | :D |
| Hankenstein | Where do we need to go from here? |
| JParisse | OK on to SG10 specs |
| JParisse | 14" x 50"wl |
| JParisse | .1uf |
| JParisse | 3600 rpm 240pps SRSG |
| JParisse | 36 x 10" toroid |
| GaryPeterson | I had a big name in the field tell me that my $1,250 award could be snatched up in a moment! |
| Piranha | Is that like the Pepsi Center coil? |
| JParisse | no the Pepsi coil was the first SG20 a larger coil... |
| GaryPeterson | Right |
| JParisse | that was a great political story about not asking permission only to beg forgivness later |
| JParisse | the begging didn't work... ;-( |
| JParisse | a guy form the NHL wanted the TC but didn't tell the Pepsi Center untill they hear it from their offices |
| JParisse | wow were they mad... |
| Piranha | I don't remember an upside down coil before it. |
| JParisse | out goes the coil and I drive back to LA |
| JParisse | there were others... |
| TerryBlake | what was your wire gauge on the secondary and the primary thickness? |
| JParisse | this one was specifically designed to work upside down.... after watching the failures (mine and others) |
| GaryPeterson | Are you familiar with the YahooTesla Wireless group? |
| JParisse | no... I'm into TU !!!! So you've never even heard of it? |
| JParisse | 20awg.. she rings at 144kHz (every time... we have built 20!) |
| Piranha | That coil got me started working on E-Tesla. |
| JParisse | E-Tesla was a ground breaker! |
| BartBAnderson | yep |
| JParisse | It showed me things I never saw in my head! |
| Piranha | Yeah. Now everybody thinks that stuff is easy :D |
| JParisse | The SG10-TC is the world's most widely used TC because of your help Terry! |
| JParisse | it is easy... that's why some people move on to other challenges... |
| Piranha | Bart and Paul have made if far cooler with the JAVA things added |
| JParisse | I would but it is too late... I'm too invested in kVA |
| TerryBlake | the primary does not look very thick, r u using 1/2" tubing? |
| JParisse | OK here is an endorsement.... I use JavaTC now too... |
| BartBAnderson | oh nice! |
| JParisse | 3/8 |
| TerryBlake | hehe, even thinner than I guessed |
| JParisse | a "little" resistance in the tank doesn't hurt.... |
| TerryBlake | does it get hot? |
| Piranha | Widens the bandwidth. |
| JParisse | no way.... I perfer ribbon... |
| Phillip | :| |
| Phillip | I stopped using ribbon. |
| Phillip | FEMM models told me it was B A D |
| JParisse | yeah we'll bandwidth is a doubleedged sword in the field... I agree in narrow band |
| Bert_Hickman | DRSSTC and SGTC are different - not as much primary heating for the latter |
| JParisse | the SG20 used both a 1/2" tubing and ribbon in the same dimention |
| JParisse | and the ribbon worked better but that is a spark gap coil at 20kva |
| BartBAnderson | And compact doesn't hurt |
| JParisse | wanna hear about our DRSSTC work?... |
| Phillip | Yeah |
| Bert_Hickman | Yep - just anither set of tradeoffs |
| Phillip | SGTC --> snooze. |
| TerryBlake | so, y r u using tubing if u like ribbon better? |
| Hankenstein | Are you using a 25kva pot? and, if so, what voltage? |
| JParisse | OK first Terry.... |
| Piranha | what? |
| Bert_Hickman | Other Terry... :P |
| JParisse | Yes I don't want to change a winning design... the last eight or so have been identical... that makes me really happy... it is a grand design not to be messed with... I'm done and now it must make money (cash cow) |
| BartBAnderson | mooo |
| JParisse | ok onto hank.... 25kVA Pot?... not sure what you mean?... |
| BartBAnderson | I assumed PT |
| BartBAnderson | or pig |
| TerryBlake | then, the DRSSTC work |
| Hankenstein | Power transformer rating....KVA and Secondary Voltage. |
| JParisse | OK... yes a 25kVA pole pig 14.4 kV, 240:120V |
| JParisse | ok on to solid state.... |
| GaryPeterson | Have you ever considered modifying it for wireless transmission. You could win the $1,250!!!! |
| Hankenstein | Wow, that.s big. You must be getting very long hot sparks. |
| Phillip | w00t solid state. |
| JParisse | Gary.... um... no.... the SG20-TC rents for $4500 per day with an average rental grossing $15-$25k (or more for stadium type shows) so the prize isn't |
| JParisse | enough for me to hack up a machine.... OK now to solid state.... |
| BartBAnderson | yes SS |
| John | i agree :P |
| JParisse | Wea are working with a LA base performance art group called Lightning Temple |
| GaryPeterson | I ment one of your SS coils. |
| JParisse | This group is interested in developing the technology |
| JParisse | and are providing funds and manpower to do so |
| JParisse | so we are pushing the envelope with them |
| JParisse | working with Aron on CW audio modulated designes |
| Phillip | Oh |
| Phillip | Large scale? |
| JParisse | here is what we found.... |
| JParisse | Distilled Water |
| JParisse | yep that is what we are using to cool the primary |
| Bert_Hickman | Hehe... |
| JParisse | flows on the inside |
| John | ha |
| BartBAnderson | oh, water cooled primary... |
| Bert_Hickman | Lots of folks seem to be scared of doing this for some reason... |
| John | good ghoice, non conductive...almost |
| Phillip | Any reason not to use a larger conductor? |
| JParisse | electricty on the outside and special connectors that serve a dual purpose.... |
| JParisse | size... |
| Goodchild | hello every one |
| JParisse | we want to reduce the size and capacitor heating and primary heating were the biggest problems |
| TerryBlake | hi |
| GaryPeterson | Yes, I've spoken with them. A little while back they were ready to set up shop w/ someone in the China. Much like Terrance and Phillip. |
| JParisse | it is easy to cool the IGBTs.... |
| Bert_Hickman | Do you use any heat exchanger or just a larger quantity of water. Are you also using water cooled induction heating caps? |
| Piranha | You want DI water not distilled actually. |
| cameron | brb |
| John | cool |
| JParisse | yes The Lightning Temple is a big group but at their core are the best of Hollywood's below the line thecnicians... |
| Phillip | 13 well 12 right now. |
| Piranha | distilled will desolve the pipes but prolly no worry in your time frame of operation. |
| BartBAnderson | What are the amps in this test mode? |
| JParisse | yeah!!!! TU Roeck... thanks Cameron for hosting this "event" |
| Phillip | How about oil cooling? |
| JParisse | we thought about oil and Chris Hooper seems to have mastered that but the idea was replaced by water for simplicity (aqnd lab clean up). |
| Phillip | Okay, so you have a big heat exchanger? |
| JParisse | the amps are in the thousands... it is really amazing... |
| BartBAnderson | Apparently yes, the primary itself |
| JParisse | I don't like to be in the same room |
| BartBAnderson | don't blame you... LOL |
| John | haha |
| Phillip | Wait thousands of amps CW? |
| GaryPeterson | They seem to have backed off on the China deal. Probably best to keep things local for the time being. It is a little dissapointing that the subject still is forbidden for the most part. |
| John | what kind of igbt's do you use? |
| JParisse | China deal.... wow... paper tiger.... ggrrrrrrr! |
| TerryBlake | bigger than CM600s? |
| TerryBlake | that 1200A IGBT at InfoUnlimited? |
| GaryPeterson | What ever happened to Terrance and Phillip? |
| BartBAnderson | 2400A |
| BartBAnderson | ? |
| Phillip | Chris hooper should be in here! |
| Goodchild | i was looking at those |
| JParisse | IGBTs.... no I think CM600s but theu may have gone up... 2000A sounds right... |
| JParisse | no... because I really can't answer any technical questions |
| JParisse | unless |
| JParisse | they are about micro UAVs |
| JParisse | ;-) |
| TerryBlake | is it using PWM modulation of the CW? |
| JParisse | I have become the "office" guy over the years... it is sad... |
| Piranha | I thought Finn was running 4500A though something. |
| JParisse | No... we have applied for a patent on the modulation scheme.... |
| JParisse | Finn kicks ass... he is my EU hero! |
| TerryBlake | amplitude? |
| BartBAnderson | Is the scheme totally new or built on top of other designs? |
| JParisse | were working of the Blaupunk patent for tweeters |
| JParisse | so a mod... |
| BartBAnderson | neat! |
| JParisse | I don't know that specs except that which our lawyer charges |
| Phillip | Ahhh |
| JParisse | < attempt at humor |
| Phillip | <cricket noise> |
| Piranha | Any ultrasonic bias carriers? |
| BartBAnderson | Patent lawyers are fun, aren't they... hehe |
| JParisse | grrrr... don't get me started.... |
| GaryPeterson | What about a lighter-than-air UAV poweredand controlled by a TC transmitter? |
| Goodchild | patents are slow and hard to get.:( |
| Piranha | Everything I do is opens source. I starve them PLs :D |
| JParisse | I do have a patent on the DMX control of TCs.... |
| JParisse | the ONE thing Terry couldn't get to first! |
| BartBAnderson | haha |
| JParisse | OK... next question... business, travel, etc>>>> |
| Phillip | When do you come to AL |
| JParisse | Mid September... |
| BartBAnderson | Tell of your plans next week |
| John | sweet jeff |
| JParisse | Off to Switzerland... I begged to get off of it... |
| BartBAnderson | Every been there? |
| JParisse | I don't like to travel anymore... I'm DONE |
| BartBAnderson | me too... I understand |
| JParisse | yes it is lovely... the people are lovely... I love the Germans... |
| JParisse | I just don't like to get on a plane and be away from my kids... |
| BartBAnderson | Ahh, their still young then... hehe |
| JParisse | travel while working is not whay oit is cracked up to be... |
| JParisse | notice that Jim and Sam when to China?.... |
| Phillip | Sure |
| Bert_Hickman | Travel USED to be fun... |
| Piranha | You could write a viral song "United breaks Tesla coils" :D |
| Bert_Hickman | Heh.. |
| JParisse | need young guys to come up through the ranks and see the world! |
| BartBAnderson | Absolutely... travel is for the young |
| JParisse | like the navy... it is a really hard job... much harder than I ever thought |
| JParisse | not the Navy TCs.... |
| JParisse | India had NO Copper! |
| Piranha | I hated travel when I was young too... |
| John | huh jeff? |
| JParisse | The technicians kept saying "No, Mr. Jeff Copper is for jewelry"... they had no idea that we use it for plumbing |
| John | haha |
| JParisse | No copper wires, pipes.... |
| John | wow |
| Piranha | aluminum in India than? |
| BartBAnderson | PVC Heaven? |
| JParisse | the show generators all had "SMOKE" comming off of all the AL wire |
| John | copper does polish up quite nice ;) |
| JParisse | which was all hot... |
| John | geez that must have been scary |
| Phillip | Yikes |
| JParisse | Aziz, come over here. Mr. Jeff says that they have copper plumbing in the US.... |
| Phillip | Al wire sucks. |
| TerryBlake | In mid-April, there will be a MAJOR announcement regarding Hollywood and the Tesla coil community. I'm talking about a highly visible group of people taking command of evangelizing Tesla's contributions and way of thinking. - JP |
| BartBAnderson | I thought South America was bad... LOL |
| JParisse | No. Mr. Jeff copper is for jewelry... I must have heard that five or six times! |
| TerryBlake | I missed the anouncement, can u fill us in? |
| JParisse | OK Terry that is the next question.... |
| JParisse | WTF was that announcement about.... |
| TerryBlake | that was a email u send on the TCML on March 30 |
| JParisse | Perhaps a bit of hyperbole but that was the announcement of our "parterning" with Lightning Temple to |
| TerryBlake | ah |
| JParisse | work on performance art and TC design... |
| JParisse | The Hollywood part is that there are many Hollywood palyers in the Lightning Temple |
| JParisse | so there is a lot of clout. Sony is shopping a script |
| JParisse | on Nicola Tesla that so far is rather fact based since you can have images in multiple sets, it's not a maintenance nightmare. you can have images in multiple sets, it's not a maintenance nightmare. |
| JParisse | How about this > David Bowie builds TCs... |
| GaryPeterson | The demonstration of wireless transmission is a big part of their agenda. Have you seen anything that they have done in this regard? |
| JParisse | That is planned for later... The funds are going itno the entertainment end first |
| JParisse | OK guys 30min left... anymore questions?.... |
| David_Rieben | Holy smokes! This place is really full tonight. :P |
| BartBAnderson | Yeah, David Bowie and TC's |
| JParisse | I think that is so cool... I think of him toiling away... reading up on pupman etc... ha ha ha |
| BartBAnderson | I think of him using Javatc... haha |
| JParisse | LOL !!!! |
| Phillip | Ha |
| Phillip | You would say that :P |
| TerryBlake | how about some SG-20TC specs? |
| BartBAnderson | Love David Bowie... one of my all time favorite people and performer |
| Piranha | Maybe he will write a TC song |
| Bert_Hickman | Tesla would have killed for the tools and materials we have today... |
| BartBAnderson | Yeah, maybe write a TC song... we could use a new one... |
| David_Rieben | David Bowie, guess my favorite of his is "Rebel, Rebel", Bart. |
| Hankenstein | Jeff, can you tell me a little more about the Lightning Temple Group...they contacted us a while back. |
| JParisse | he is really shy about TC stuff... never asked for any help... likes to tinker like most of us.... |
| Piranha | My $450 laptop does more calculations in 1/1000th of a second than he did in his entire life :) |
| JParisse | OK SG20 specs and them more on Ligfhtning Temple..... |
| David_Rieben | Ha |

| JParisse | Lightning Temple is run from a shop on Pico on the west side of LA |
| Phillip | Woah 60kHz |
| Phillip | That high? |
| TerryBlake | maybe we can drive it with IGBTs? |
| JParisse | The principals are a husband and wife team. The husband works in the movies (he was the technician that fitted all the coustumes in Tron with lights and stuff) |
| JParisse | and the wife is an online community bulider |
| BartBAnderson | yeah, that was cool |
| JParisse | that has many corporate clinets |
| JParisse | together they live at the shop wuth 20 other artists and musicians |
| JParisse | in whay I guess one could call a "commune" but it really is more "business' than that |
| JParisse | Everytime I go to a fund raiding meeting, I meet someone new and famous or quasi so... |
| JParisse | like Tom Petty's drummer the last meeting... |
| JParisse | it is probably the best group to affect pop culture |
| David_Rieben | Hey, John, that was NOT the only song about Tesla, check this one out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UxNuYHiSfI |
| JParisse | as everything comes from LA and these guys are the guys that are the creatives behind that ... |
| JParisse | I don't really think that |
| JParisse | I'm jsut trying to make a point |
| JParisse | Tesla name is really getting out there |
| David_Rieben | Yeah |
| BartBAnderson | It sure is |
| JParisse | an Lightning Temple is one of the conduits |

| TerryBlake | looks like they have an SG-10TC and a faraday suit |
| JParisse | Performance art... mostly Cirque du Soleil type with more fire... |
| TerryBlake | http://lightningtemple.net/?page_id=41 |
| John | haha david |
| JParisse | Yeah I donated the services of the SG10 for a photo shoot... |
| JParisse | http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNz2fyp7hAM |
| David_Rieben | Yep, John, and sung by who other than - Tesla. :P |
| BartBAnderson | Yes, I can see how SG10 is a cash cow... big and protable |
| BartBAnderson | portable |
| JParisse | Here is how to use a TC to raise money for charity.... |
| JParisse | very portable... one person can set it up without any tools |
| Phillip | Ohhh |
| Phillip | THe delicious smell of ozone. |
| Phillip | So refreshing. |
| JParisse | http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9VjokVhxtc |
| Hankenstein | Jeff, have you seen our new controller that changes the spark length and pitch on the fly? |
| JParisse | The Torrance city mayor chickened out |
| JParisse | so we had to fry a councilman! |
| David_Rieben | Hehe |
| JParisse | No, Hank, I have not... but I am interested in permoting musical instruments and you and Chris are prime luthiers! |
| Phillip | Had the fire department there |
| JParisse | Oh yeah!!!! Love the fire department... they love mayhem! |
| BartBAnderson | Damn Jeff, he didn't even flinch! |
| Phillip | Hey! |
| Phillip | You finally made it, Chris! |
| David_Rieben | I wouldn't mind "frying" my mayor and some of the councilmen to boot. >:-D |
| Dr_Spark | yep here |
| Phillip | Cool. |
| cameron | heheh |
| BartBAnderson | Hi Chris |
| Hankenstein | Het ghris! |
| Dr_Spark | good day to all |
| JParisse | not only that but the chick in the white pants would have had me right there if I wasn't married! |
| David_Rieben | It's the one and only Chris Hooper! How the heck are you? |
| Phillip | Check this out, Chris -> http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2674/3821587179_c31acf3104_o.jpg |
| cameron | the doctor's in... |
| JParisse | fashionably late... |
| Dr_Spark | goood making a bigggg VTTC |
| BartBAnderson | hehe Jeff |
| Phillip | Constructed with your preferred material, acrylic :) |
| Hankenstein | Jeff, the link to the demo is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhu03EdcJSI |
| BartBAnderson | Acrylic,... of course |
| Phillip | I just started over and threw that little coil I brought to the WWT away. |
| Dr_Spark | YES BUT WITH WATER TANK |
| John | hey |
| BartBAnderson | water tank? |
| Dr_Spark | AND PIG IN PLEXY AND OIL\\ |
| John | haha |
| Phillip | The Hoopertron liquid plasma plate transformer? |
| John | DR spark, i am teslacoolguy from 4hv |
| BartBAnderson | OK Phillip, John, Steve... going oil filled on my VTTC.. |
| Hankenstein | Don't lie, Chris. The next coil is made out of cast iron! |
| Phillip | Hahaha |
| John | HAHAHA |
| John | why not plexi? :P |
| Phillip | Gotta join the club? |
| Dr_Spark | Only a 15kva 7kv piggy |
| JParisse | Hank... I did see that video... You and Chris need to polich your marketing. You're too talented to pass by. I'd love to help YOU bring your products to market... Call me sometime... |
| JParisse | polish |
| Hankenstein | Woops...didn't mean to give it away! |
| Phillip | That disco ball is funny. |
| Hankenstein | Jeff, you have no idea how hard it was to keep a straight face on that one! |
| John | hahaha |
| John | i saw the youtube vid and i cracked up |
| JParisse | you guys are totally on the right track... |
| Dr_Spark | Jeff are you coming to WWT 2010? |
| JParisse | America, Hell Yeah! |
| John | LOL |
| John | team america :-) |
| Phillip | You have to prove it Jeff. |
| David_Rieben | HAnk are you the one that was playing "Wipe Out" on an electric guitar through a SSTC on a youtube video? |
| Phillip | Just like Gary had to prove his loyalty.... :-) |
| Hankenstein | yah....that was way back when...our first modulator |
| JParisse | ;-) but how can I prove you can trust me?... |
| Phillip | :-) |
| Phillip | Heh, I recognize the scope in your video, Henry. |
| David_Rieben | Being somewhat of an ameteur guitarist myself, I thought that was a pretty cool concept. |
| JParisse | don't get me started on Team America... this will go donwhill fast... I love that movie... |
| Phillip | Looks quite like mine :D |
| Hankenstein | David, that was our prototype vttc using a drsstc controller |
| BartBAnderson | Perfect Hank, why not... |
| John | haha jeff |
| JParisse | OK guys... 10 minutes left of me, me, me... |
| David_Rieben | Can you feasibly modulate a DRSSTC with the input from a guitar's humbucker pick-ups, then? |
| JParisse | anymore questions?.... |
| David_Rieben | I came into the game too late to really conjer up any good questions for you, Jeff. :P |
| Phillip | Did you ever find a way to get the DOlphs EB-41 through the mail? |
| Dr_Spark | Jeff like to talk to you on the phone sometime or maybe ride up on my Harley and visit? |
| JParisse | Philip.... If you still want some... I can buy it and have EIS send it to you... my pleasure.... |
| Phillip | Cool class e video, Henry. |
| Hankenstein | Yah...what about playing our controller through your spark dodger? |
| JParisse | Chris... I'd show you a good time my friend! |
| Phillip | Oh, well, i don't want you to have to go through that much trouble. |
| BartBAnderson | Here's a question Jeff.... ever thought about hosing a coiler event? |
| John | chris are you going to stick around here for a little while? |
| Phillip | I need to find a black coil form. |
| JParisse | it is less throuble than my trip to the post office ... :D |
| Hankenstein | I'll bring my trailer and a stretcher! |
| David_Rieben | Oh, Jeff, I have one. Do you think it a good idea to ground the secondary and primary coils together at the bottom to RF ground? |
| Phillip | :-):-) |
| JParisse | First Bart then David... |
| John | LOL:-):-):-) |
| David_Rieben | Or is it better to leave the secondary floating? |
| Phillip | WOAH |
| Dr_Spark | Cool, will give you a call next week, Hank just ride up with me on your HD |
| Phillip | Never let the secondary float. |
| cameron | he meant primary |
| Hankenstein | Did I hear ROAD TRIP??? |
| TerryBlake | ah |
| John | i think secondary=primary |
| BartBAnderson | hehe |
| David_Rieben | Yeah, sorry, I meant primary. |
| TerryBlake | float secondary = bipolar coil |
| JParisse | I would love to have a coiling event and I would love to sell the broadcast rights... I think the time is right but I don't want to step on the already established events.... I'd do something... well.... Hollywood! |
| JParisse | Road trip.... yeah baby..... |
| cameron | step on? there's only a few and certainly room for more. |
| JParisse | ok onto dAVID'S q.... |
| TerryBlake | do u know the sparkdodger Fres? |
| BartBAnderson | Well consider it... some event may wind down in the future.. |
| Phillip | I'd fly out. |
| cameron | me too |
| Phillip | I'll bring my little DR ;) |
| JParisse | We connect all the console grounds and ground them to house power. The RF ground is seperate and usually a welding cable to nearby steel or copper pipe |
| cameron | and i'd drag david :) |
| Hankenstein | Chris..."Stubzilla" will fit on the back of the Harley....let's go! |
| David_Rieben | hehe |
| Phillip | Kicking and screaming if necessary. |
| JParisse | what was the q again? |
| BartBAnderson | Hell, Jeff, you've got to chat with us more... even your guru's there at KVA would be nice |
| David_Rieben | About is it good to ground the base of the primary and secondary common to RF ground? |
| JParisse | No... I never do that... |
| Phillip | Sessions could just last longer than 2 hours. |
| JParisse | The primary and secondary are seperate systems |
| John | :-) |
| Phillip | :D |
| JParisse | I DO have a feature I do not see elsewhere |
| Hankenstein | Maybe we need to get a 75 meter net going....more reliable |
| JParisse | I have a ball gap on the inside of the primary to RF ground.... |
| Phillip | See David, the pros float the primary :) |
| BartBAnderson | and what is that Jeff? |
| JParisse | the pros DO float the primary |
| Phillip | Interesting. |
| David_Rieben | Well, Jeff, the only problem I have is that I did run mine that way problem free but as soon as I did seperate them per Phillip's nagging, I started having big problems with HV flashovers getting back into the LV side of my control panel! |
| cameron | heh |
| JParisse | if the primary gets hit the gap shunts the HV to ground |
| cameron | (phillip's nagging) |
| Hankenstein | I float the pri on zotzilla |
| JParisse | if the cap overvolts it grounds through the primary (low resistance) |
| John | lol |
| BartBAnderson | But Jeff, it does that in both situations |
| BartBAnderson | It just does |
| David_Rieben | Guess I'll have to continue running mine the "non-pro" way. ;) |
| Phillip | I like gap from primary idea. |
| BartBAnderson | OH damn, starting feel like TCML... hehe |
| JParisse | LOL |
| TerryBlake | no strike rails for jeff |
| Phillip | I like putting a safety gap at the main gap. |
| David_Rieben | As that's the way that didn't net me a hwole bunch of HV kickbacks into my control panel. |
| cameron | wish bert was here... it would be nice to really hash this one out... i float as well, just don't nag |
| BartBAnderson | or for Bart |
| JParisse | nope... primary hits go to ground through the ball gap |
| Phillip | This way when the cap over volts it just dumps through the primary. |
| David_Rieben | hehe, Cameron |
| Phillip | I kinda don't care now. |
| Phillip | I run DRs :) |
| Phillip | They're better. |
| John | lol |
| Piranha | Top arcs to the primary is a giant "the devil is in the details" problem... |
| John | me to :) |
| JParisse | OK guys... my two hours of fame are over |
| Dr_Spark | DRs get boring after 7 years |
| John | see ya |
| JParisse | thanks for allowing me to host this chat.... |
| David_Rieben | hehe |
| Phillip | Thanks for being here. |
| Hankenstein | 15 yearss on same cap....quality build |
| cameron | Thank you Jeff! |
| John | glad you joined us tonight |
| Phillip | Boring? |
| BartBAnderson | Thank You Jeff!! a bunch.. don't be a stranger here. |
| David_Rieben | Good to chat with you. |
| Dr_Spark | Thanks Jeff, will go back to under ground! |
| JParisse | man this was fun... I'm working on a lineup so we can do this one per month.... |
| Piranha | ;) |
| TerryBlake | thanx jeff |
| Hankenstein | Thanks again, Jeff much appreciated |
| BartBAnderson | excellent! |
| cameron | sounds good! |
| JParisse | not underground just on vacation... ;-) |
| John | nice |
| Phillip | ha |
| JParisse | thank YOU... you guys are great and I feel welcome here. Thanks again... Jeff Out... |
