Well from what it sounds like you should probably consider starting over and doing a bit more research into what materials you would like to use.  If you have a good NST then you will just need to find some decent wire, form, and capacitor bank. I would definately recommend replacing the secondary if it is spliced together by multiple pieces of wire.

one more question, what size capacitor would u recomend for a 4.5 kv NST
