I am building a new coil and was wondering what coilers are currently using to coat the secondary. I am using PVC coated wire and had planned on using shellack. Is there something out there that is better and is the new standard? Thanks.

Shellac or lacquer are the older tried and true methods. Their dielectric constant is very low, their dielectric strength is fair.

I use Krylon Anti-UV Gloss coating, just a  Light Shot  to hold it in place. (ACE hardware). It Stays Clear, in a thin layer it doesn't even show. Prevents tarnish, I use it  on all copper and brass except where a connection must be made. Its heat resistance is good.

Varathane has a high dielectric constant and will cause a bit less efficiency.  I yellows, too.

Thanks!
Too late, I have already applied 3 light coats of the shellac, and except for some shrinkage and separation I think it will work out fine. Since it is a bipolar coil I will have it loosely coupled and not be trying for max arc length. The picture shows that I have not yet worked out the primary or secondary physical support. I may not use those toroids depending on tuning.

Furniture epoxy is second to none. They have it at home depot. I don't even think about using anything else. It can withstand secondary arcs like nothing else. I've coated well over 100 secondaries with it.

Thanks Tom ! I will give it a try on the conical coil I am currently reconstructing. Thanks again. Owen -
