Title: Bill Wysock Puts the 13M Up For Sale - One of the World's Largest Tesla Coils
Post by: cameron on November 03, 2009, 02:54:57 AM
Hello again everyone,

The following is an email I received from Bill Wysock in response to my inquiry about the sale of his 13M Tesla magnifier. You can read more about this email in the One of the World's Largest Tesla Coils Up For Sale (http://www.teslauniverse.com/community/blogs/tesla-universe-news/entry-11/0) blog post here on Tesla Universe.

Photos of the 13M from Bill's web site have been consolidated into a gallery you can see here: Photos of Bill Wysock's Model 13M (http://www.teslauniverse.com/vault/photos/wysock-13m/0)

Feel free to reply to this post or contact Bill directly using the contact information near the bottom of the post with any questions.

Thanks,
Cameron

Cameron,

You are welcome to post this reply on the Tesla Universe web site.

13M is a complete turn-key system.  It takes a crane, a fork lift, a bucket truck, a crew of 4 skilled people, and at least one day to assemble.  Please see all the pictures on my web site.  13M consists of all the following:

300 amp 3-pole 480 volt UL approved disconnect switch box.

150 KVa single phase 480/240 volt isolation transformer (enclosed in a UL approved metal box on castors).

100 KVa Power Controller (double-wide 6' tall rack cabinet with locking castors) custom designed and built by me.  This cabinet contains 12 General Radio Variacs; 6 in parallel for voltage control, 6 in parallel for current control, all motorized from the front panel).  There are two modes of operation for this controller.  Manual or timed preprogramed. No expense was spared in the design or construction of this unit.

4 foot tall rack cabinet containing 4 General Radio Variacs for operation of the 10 HP synchronous 3,600 rpm rotary spark gap on castors.

T & R Electric 100 KVa power transformer no PCB's, single phase, 240/480 V low/ 34.5 KV high, on a steel platform with locking castors.

12 Hypotronics Polypropylene Pulse capacitors (.1 mfd @ 50 KVAC/RMS) in series/parallel on an insulated platform with castors for a combined
capacity of 0.15 MFD @ 100 KVAC/RMS and an additional stack of two Cornell-Dublier Mica capacitors series connected to yield 0.025 MFD @ 100 KV on an insulated 18" diameter platform with castors.  This is connected in parallel with the Hypotronics capacitor bank to yield a total tank circuit capacitance of 0.175 MFD @ 100 KV.  Two solid copper rails form the buss bars on the main capacitor bank with two 3" dia. copper spheres forming an adjustable safety gap.

10 HP 3,600 rpm synchronous rotary spark gap with dual squirrel cage blower on an aluminum platform with castors.  More then $6,000.00 went into the design and construction of this custom made gap alone. There are 4 pairs of two solid 1/2" dia. 2% thorium-doped tungsten electrodes as stationary and 2 pairs of two as rotary electrodes.

Master Oscillator.  Primary is two turns in parallel of 500 MCM welding cable.  Secondary is 30 turns of mil-spec #4 AWG silver-tinned wire all on a Sitka-Spruce wooden squirrel cage frame.  The frame sits atop 4 porcelain station post 4 foot tall insulators.  This Master Oscillator is designed such that the wooden framework is in pieces for ease of transport.  It must be assembled on location and the primary and secondary windings wound on the form in a carousel manner. A crane is needed to perform this work.  The framework is assembled on the floor. The crane picks up the form off the floor and the windings are attached using the swivel hook on the headache ball. Then the four 4' tall porcelain base insulators are attached and the Master Oscillator is set in place. The top turn of the Master Oscillator consists of a full turn of 4" diameter flexible steel tubing forming a toroid corona suppression ring.

Extra Coil.  This coil is also wound on a Sitka/Spruce wooden framework that is fully pre-assembled.  It consists of 150 turns of mil-spec #8 AWG silver-tinned wire and has the first and last turns of 4" diameter flexible steel tubing forming toroid corona suppression rings. A crane is needed to pick up the coil from its custom-made transport cradle frame that has swivel castors for ease of movement, and mount it vertically on top of the 8 foot high custom-made porcelain insulator pedestal. This pedestal has four swivel locking heavy-duty castors at its base.

A 45 foot long  4" diameter flexible steel tube serves as the transmission line between the output of the Master Oscillator secondary coil and the input of the Extra Coil.  There are two 6" diameter PVC pillar supports to support the transmission line between the two coils.

The stand-off spacer between the top of the Extra Coil and the main toroid discharge electrode consists of four phenolic threaded rods and a phenolic tube 30" in diameter and 36" tall.  When assembled, there is a compression fit between the toroid and the top plate of the Extra Coil.

Custom made 8 foot diameter Toroid made by O. W. Landergren with a 3 foot cross-section. Comes with a custom-made wood crate.

All necessary hardware, wire, and misc. components are included in this turn-key system. Inspection of 13M can be made by appointment. 13M is in storage in a hangar in El Monte, California.
