Welcome to the Nikola Tesla Patent Database

Tesla Patent Magnification Function
Each patent image can be viewed in detail with the built-in magnification function.
Here you will find Tesla's patents fully restored, as you've never seen them before. Each patent was scanned from the best sources we could locate, OCR'ed and painstakingly proofread word by word. The illustrations were meticulously reconstructed to the best of our ability without redrawing them. And now, for the first time (that we know of), you can search through the actual text of the patents. You may also download PDF versions of the patents using the icons to the right of each listing's title.

In the near future you'll be able to comment, rate and tag the patents. We will also be adding the U.S. patent wrappers (correspondence between Tesla and the examiners) and the non-U.S. Tesla patents.

Please note that one of our main goals was to preserve the essence of the original patents as closely as possible. A very small number of glaring mistakes, misspellings, etc. were corrected, but otherwise, the patents remain a very close facsimile to the originals. Don't be surprised by finding errors, inconsistencies or mistakes.

Tesla Patent 335,786

335,786 - Electric-Arc Lamp

Category: Lighting

Country: United States

Application Date: March 30th, 1885

Issue Date: February 9th, 1886

Download Patent In PDF
My invention relates more particularly to those arc-lamps in which the separation and feed of the carbon electrodes or their equivalents is accomplished by means of electromagnets or solenoids in connection with suitable clutch-mechanism; and it is designed to remedy certain faults common to the greater part of the... more >>

Tesla Patent 334,823

334,823 - Commutator for Dynamo-Electric Machines

Category: Motors & Generators

Country: United States

Application Date: May 6th, 1885

Issue Date: January 26th, 1886

Download Patent In PDF
It is known that in machines of great electro-motive force—such, for instance, as those used for arc lights—whenever one commutator bar or plate comes out of contact with the collecting-brush a spark appears on the commutator. This spark may be due to the break of the complete circuit, or of a shunt of low... more >>

Tesla Patent 336,961

336,961 - Regulator for Dynamo-Electric Machines

Category: Motors & Generators

Country: United States

Application Date: May 18th, 1885

Issue Date: March 2nd, 1886

Download Patent In PDF
The object of my invention is to provide an improved method for regulating the current on dynamo-electric machines. In my improvement I make use of two main brushes, to which the ends of the helices of the field-magnets are connected, and an auxiliary-brush and a branch or shunt-connection to form an intermediate... more >>

Tesla Patent 336,962

336,962 - Regulator for Dynamo-Electric Machines

Category: Motors & Generators

Country: United States

Application Date: June 1st, 1885

Issue Date: March 2nd, 1886

Download Patent In PDF
In my improvement I employ one or more auxiliary brushes, by means of which I shunt a portion or the whole of the field-helices. According to the relative position upon the commutator of the respective brushes more or less current is caused to pass through the helices of the field, and the current developed by the... more >>

Tesla Patent 350,954

350,954 - Regulator for Dynamo-Electric Machines

Category: Motors & Generators

Country: United States

Application Date: January 14th, 1886

Issue Date: October 19th, 1886

Download Patent In PDF
In another applications I have shown the commutator of a dynamo-machine with the main brushes connected in an electric circuit, and one or more auxiliary brushes serving to shunt a part or the whole of the field-coils, the regulation of the current being effected by shifting the respective brushes automatically upon... more >>

Tesla Patent 396,121

396,121 - Thermo-Magnetic Motor

Category: Motors & Generators

Country: United States

Application Date: March 30th, 1886

Issue Date: January 15th, 1889

Download Patent In PDF
In my present invention I obtain mechanical power by a reciprocating action resulting from the joint operations of heat, magnetism, and a spring or weight or other force—that is to say, I subject a body magnetized by induction or otherwise to the action of heat until the magnetism is sufficiently neutralized to... more >>

Tesla Patent 335,787

335,787 - Electric-Arc Lamp

Category: Lighting

Country: United States

Application Date: July 13th, 1886

Issue Date: February 9th, 1886

Download Patent In PDF
In my present invention I further provide means for automatically withdrawing a lamp from the circuit, or cutting out the same, when, from a failure of the feed, the arc reaches an abnormal length, and also means for automatically reinserting such lamp in the circuit when the rod drops and the carbons come into... more >>

Tesla Patent 359,748

359,748 - Dynamo-Electric Machine

Category: Motors & Generators

Country: United States

Application Date: December 1st, 1886

Issue Date: March 22nd, 1887

Download Patent In PDF
The main objects of my invention are to increase the efficiency of the machine and to facilitate and cheapen the construction of the same; and to this end my invention relates to the magnetic frame and the armature, and to other features of construction, hereinafter more fully explained. My invention is illustrated in... more >>

Tesla Patent 382,845

382,845 - Commutator for Dynamo-Electric Machines

Category: Motors & Generators

Country: United States

Application Date: April 30th, 1887

Issue Date: May 15th, 1888

Download Patent In PDF
The objects of the invention are, first, to avoid the sparking and the gradual wearing away or destruction of the commutator-segments and brushes or collectors resulting therefrom; second, to obviate the necessity of readjustment of the commutator or the brushes or collectors and other consequences of the wear of the... more >>
