I wonder what the basis is for the page 2 comment, suggesting that enamel & Formvar insulated wire is the LEAST desirable type for use in a coil - cotton-covered being the best.

On the idea that space-wound coils are desirable over close-wound coils and cotton insulation makes it easy to wind in spacing. Not that I agree with this, but seems to be why the comment was made.

I have heard about using it for spacing (not that I agree either), and I have also heard of the idea that when shellac or varnish is applied, the cotton would soak it up and thereby better insulate the secondary wire.
